International Experts Conduct a Workshop at EIC

A workshop organized by Munich Mauritius Reinsurance Company has been conducted by two renowned experts, Mrs. Regina Linder and Mr. Ashok Prayag, on the topics Enterprise risk management, strategy finding and implementation and capital adequacy and capital models on May 28 and 29, 2009 at EIC’s auditorium.

It was stated in the message that the workshop was expected with great pleasure and keen interest to be conducted by the higher experts. Having expressed EIC’s gratefulness to Mr. Junior Ngulube, the CEO of Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa,  
 

Mrs. Linder and Mr. Prayag for taking their time to arrange the workshop, he underscored that the workshop helps the EIC’s staff to gain a practical knowledge on designing, implementing and monitoring strategic planning and management process.

The workshop was attended by over 50 job grade ten & above Management members. His Excellency, Ato Messai Girma, Chairman of the Board of Management of EIC and other members of the board of management have also attended the workshop.

 
   

EIC open’s two branches

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has officially opened its 38th and 39th branches at Shire Endassellassie and Semera.

The opening of Shire Endasellassie branch was held on February 8, 2009, the branch was officially opened by the North Western Tigray Zonal Administrator Mr. Michaele Abreha.

Shire Endasellassie is a city in North Western Part of Tigray regional state.

Appointment

The Public Financial Enterprises Agency has appointed Mr. Getachew Yisma, as Acting Managing Director of the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation as of February 12, 2009.

Mr. Getachew Yisma has received his BA in Economics from Addis Ababa University in 1982 and ACCA in 1995. He has 29 years of experience. He has also attended different trainings at home and abroad.

EIC conducts two Seminars

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has conducted two seminars at Cmbolcha and Mekelle for its clients on February 12th and 15th, 2009 respectively.

The participants came from 75 different organizations. They also raised questions which they want to be clear with and gave valuable suggestions.

 
   

The 4th Round “MEDIN 10 km ROAD RUN”
Takes place

The Medin ten kilometers road run which is organized by the Addis Ababa Athletics Federation in collaboration with the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation every year took place on Sunday, January 18, 2009 for the fourth time. The event which is fully sponsored by the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation made its start and finish infornt of the head office of the corporation.

 
Hundreds of athletes who represent clubs of different organizations, sub cities, educational institutions and individual athletes took part in the race.

It was learnt that in organizing this event every year, the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has the objective of motivating athletes who have the potential inorder to maintain the country’s success in the athletics area. That the Corporation, in its 33 years of existence in the insurance industry, has made a great contribution in assisting the sports activities in general and the athletics sport in particular.

 

EIC Conducts Seminar for Major Clients

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has conducted two days seminar with major clients of the Corporation from Dec. 30-31, 2008, at the corporation’s auditorium.

The seminar was aimed at consolidating the knowledge of clients with regard to the insurance policies they purchased from the Corporation.

The A/ Managing Director of the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation, Alemseged Abraham in his opening speech stated that “the comments and feedbacks from

 
our customers pertaining to our service provision will serve us as a big asset for the fundamental changes we are undertaking in the Corporation.”

Some of the themes that are discussed in the seminar are: the concept of risk, meaning, coverage and exclusions in life, fire, bond, burglary, motor, machinery breakdown insurance policies.

The seminar was provided by insurance professionals of the Corporation who have long years of experience in the Corporation.

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation gives major clients seminar twice a year in Addis Ababa.


EIC Graduates 51 Sales Agents

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has graduated 51 sales agents on 6 December 2008 at the Corporation’s auditorium.

The training was given to the sales agents for a month at the Ethiopian Financial Studies Academy on the basic concepts of life and non life insurance policies.

The representative of the trainees on his part state that “the training has created adequate understanding regarding the basics of insurance”.

Sales agents take Refreshment Training

As per the directive of the National Bank of Ethiopia, EIC offered refreshment training for 130 sales agents, branch sales heads, and sales coordinators from 2nd to 4th of December 2008 at the Corporation’s auditorium.

The training was aimed at updating the knowledge of the trainees regarding new insurance policies and marketing strategies designed by the corporation.

said that the Corporation is conducting a business process reengineering in a bid to provide speedy, flexible and customer oriented services.

The three day refreshment training was mainly focused on quality services provision and customer care service.

 

EIC settles 4 million birr claim

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation settled marine insurance claim worth of 4,076,469.13 to Ethiopian Sugar Development Agency on October 8, 2008 at the Agency’s conference room.

The damage is occurred due to the penetration of water inside the cargo while the sugar is on board.

EIC gains 78.2 million birr profit

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation procured 78.2 million birr profit in 2007/08; the A/ Managing Director Mr. Alemseged Abreham disclosed during the 22nd Annual management meeting held from 29-30 August 2008.

Mr. Mesai Girma, Chairman of Board of Management of the Ethiopian Insurance Corporation, officially opened the Annual Management Meeting.

According to the corporate report presented by the acting managing director, EIC registered 17.8 percent higher profit than it gained last year.

EIC underwrite a premium of 541.1 million birr from newly sold and renewed policies. Mr. Alemseged

 

in the corporate report he presented at the opening session of the two days conference said that the above revenue was obtained from 28,121 newly sold policies and 34,320 renewed policies. This is an increase of 18.9 percent or 86 million birr compared to what was planned previously.

Out of the total revenue collected by the corporation 496.5 million birr was obtained from non life insurance out of which 47.8% of the income was procured from the private sector.

During the fiscal year the corporation paid out 231.1 million birr claims. Currently the Corporation’s total asset raised to 1.1 billion birr. According to the corporate report, motor insurance claimed the largest share of the claims paid followed by aviation, fire and life insurances.

policies in tune with the demand of the customers and to revise some of the existing ones. To this end credit insurance and student safety insurance policies are newly introduced and some amendments made on public liability policy.

Finally, the 22nd executive general assembly examined the corporation’s performance of the previous fiscal year and conducted a discussion on 2008/2009 plans.

Ethiopian Insurance CorporationConducts Training on Basic Principles of Insurance Practice

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has conducted a training on principles of insurance & practice for its legal service employees from August 18-22, 2008 in the Corporation’s auditorium.

The objective of the training was to customize the attorneys and other legal service employees with the insurance principles and practice.

  Moreover, the training was planned to refresh the employees knowledge on the policies of the Corporation provides.  
 

The participants also briefed on insurance related Ethiopian laws.

The training was given by well experienced insurance professionals of the Corporation.

All the department heads, attorneys, legal liaison officers and clerks have participated in the training.

 

EIC steps to BPR

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation conducted a one day training on the Business Process Reengineering at the Corporation’s auditorium on July 18, 2007. The training was attended by more than 60 participants including Mr. Mesay Girma, EIC’s Board of Management Chairman, Mr. Alemseged Abraham, A/ Managing Director of the Corporation, Board members, top management, as well as employees selected from different divisions, services & main branches.

 

The main purpose of the training was to familiarize the reengineering team more with the business process reengineering concept.

The trainer, Mr. Bezabih G/Yes Director, Civil Service Office at the ministry of Capacity Building underlined that reengineering in its true sense must be fundamental, radical & dramatic in improving achievements.

It is also learnt that one of the aims of the reengineering process is to integrate

 
several jobs or tasks that were done fragmentally in different work units of the organization into process thinking approach.

EIC Conduct Seminar

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation conducted major clients seminar on June 26, 2008 at the Corporation’s auditorium.

The seminar was focused on the fundamental procedures pertaining to underwriting and claim settlement of the life insurance policies. Moreover, it aimed at raising the awareness of customers with regard to the basic requirements that should be fulfilled by customers while claiming benefits from the policy purchased.

 

Mr. Alemayehu Tefera, Deputy Managing Director, Operations Division stated that life Insurance sector in Africa has not grown significantly due to various reasons. He further added that utmost effort should be made to raise the awareness of the public regarding the benefits of this particular insurance policy.

EIC settles claim for Ethiopian Tourist Trade Enterprise

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation settled fire Insurance claim worth of 3,526,139.52 to Ethiopian Tourist Trade Enterprise for the damage occurred on victory Department store, on June 18, 2008.

appreciated the assistance and cooperation rendered by the workers of Ethiopian Tourist Trade Enterprise while conducting survey after the fire accident. He added that “our Corporation has demonstrated its reliable partnership by settling the claim promptly.”

EIC conduct Training on Engineering Insurance and Claims Management

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has conducted a training on engineering insurance, consequential loss and claims management for its staffs starting from June 2- 7, 2008, at the Corporation’s auditorium.

Mr. Shiferaw Rufe Acting Deputy Managing Director , Marketing Division in his opening speech stated that “.....today we all witnessing the building of infrastructure that include the construction of big hydroelectric dams, and power stations, sought to generate electric power for our country and also major road constructions that facilitate the economic activities.” Further more he noted that it is only the

knowledge in insurance.

Additionally, he stated that as knowledge workers we should always updated ourselves by reading and using modern technology.

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has upgraded its Metu & Mizan Teferi contact offices to Branch III level as of 16 February 2008.

This is due to the fact that the investment activity in Metu & Mizan Teferi area is proliferating from time.

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation opens a new Branch

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has inaugurated its 37th branch at Bishoftu (DebreZeit) city some 45kms away from the capital Addis Ababa on Feb. 2, 2008.
Ato Alemseged Abrham, A/Managing Director of Ethiopian Insurance Corporation in his opening remark said that the opening of this branch is part of the Corporation's market development strategy.

He further noted that the Corporation is striving to satisfy the insurance needs of the society by producing new types of insurance covers and opening new branches to serve the society with a better proximity.

EIC Conducts Third Annual 10km Run

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation in collaboration with the Addis Ababa Athletics Federation conducted the third annual 10km road run 0n 27, January 2008.

The Competition was held in both sexes between athletes who came from different schools, sub cities; clubs and athletes by their private capacity.

In the competition between the clubs in group, Omedla and Getazeru has won in the females & males category respectively.

Arada Sub city won the competition between sub cities both in the females & males category. Wondirad and Medhanealem Secondary High Schools won in females and males category respectively.

Appointment

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has appointed two acting deputy Managing Director and one service manager.

Mr. Aberham Shiferaw and Mr. Shiferaw Rufe are appointed as acting Deputy Managing Directors of Human Resource Management and Property Administration and Marketing Division of the Corporation respectively as of January 15, 2008. Mr. Solomon Alemayehu is appointed as Manager, Legal Services as of January 15, 2008.

Mr. Aberham Shiferaw has received his Degree in Political Science and International Relations from Addis Ababa University and Diploma in Law from Ethiopian Civil Service College.

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation has started issuing the "EMERGENCY TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE". The Corporation starts issuing this policy based on the agreement it has signed with a German Insurance Company called RS Reise-Schutz AG. The Policy covers almost all facilities a traveler required for his/her health while abroad. The premium of the policy is based on the duration the policy is taken and the price is very attractive.

 

The benefits the Emergency Travel Health Insurance Provides:-

  • Emergency treatment by a doctor;
  • Treatment & medication prescribed by a doctor for the insured person as a result of an accident or sudden acute illness;
  • Hospital treatment on a general/not private/ ward without optional benefits, as a result, including surgery which cannot be postponed;
 
  • Ambulance transport necessary for medical reasons for treatment in the nearest possible hospital and back to the accommodation in the countries;

EIC Foot ball club lift double cups

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation's foot ball club lift two cups in the year 2006/07 both in youths and teenagers group which is being prepared by Addis Ababa Foot Ball Federation.

The teenagers team played its final game on Sunday June 11, against Rohayezing. The winning goal was scored on 50th minute. The team has completed the year with out defeat which reflects its strength. "We have done all what should be done to be a champion, so that we receive what we deserve" said the coach after the game.

On the other side, EIC's youths foot ball club secure the champions ship two games remaining to complete the league, which shows a supreme victory of the team.

The leader of both EIC teams, coach Yared, 28, titled "the coach of the year" by Addis Ababa Foot Ball Federation for his double cup winner ship in the year.

"Such kind of delightful victory is the result of our team effort, the players are very young, they have potential to play for long period of time which is an indicator of EIC's bright future in the premier league in which we

can back EIC's football club supremacy like the one that was super in 1980's" said the young coach.

EIC's Sport Association president Mengistu Meharu, on his part said "EIC has played a vital role for the growth of national football, Ethiopia's football history is an evidence for this, the Corporation is still making unrestricted effort for the development of foot ball sport & this will continue."

EIC conducts a Seminar for major clients(June 21, 2007)

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation conducted a seminar exclusively for major clients on 21st June 2007 on the Corporation's auditorium.


The seminar is held to create a common understanding on underwriting & claims procedures & documents required in respect of life and non-life classes of business with the executives of Corporate Customers.

Mr. Tesfaye Alemu, Deputy Managing Director for Marketing, explained in his opening speech that it is the Corporation's responsibility to make customers aware of the working procedures of the Corporation.

Ethiopian Insurance Corporation prepares such type of seminars at least five times in a year to create common understanding on the contents of different types of insurance covers available to the market and underwriting and claims procedures of the Corporation.

EIC conducts a seminar on floriculture insurance policy to floriculture investors, financers and Staff of the Corporation on June 18, 2007 at the Corporation's auditorium.

Mr. Tesfaye Alemu, Deputy Managing Director for Marketing, in his opening speech at the seminar pointed out that the objective of the seminar is to enlighten customers, potential customers and the financer about the risks related to floriculture, the risk management methods, and the types of cover available under floriculture insurance.

agricultural insurance, is mainly designed to give proper cover to floriculture. ... Hence, as public company we always worry about the protection provided to these floriculture investments in case of occurrence of unexpected loss ".

It is also learned that Ethiopian Insurance Corporation will continue working on creating awareness about

 

the floriculture insurance both for the potential customers and financers as long as these investments get proper insurance protection.

The explanation on floriculture was given by Mr. Andries Mahlase, agricultural specialist from Munich Re Africa Limited. Mr. Andries in his presentation mainly dealt with agricultural insurance in general and floriculture insurance in particular.

Considering the great economical & social contribution of floriculture industry in Ethiopia, Ethiopian Insurance Corporation is the pioneer in producing the proper insurance policy for floriculturalists.

 

Eic provides seminar on benefits of insurance and prevention of trafic accidents for Anbessa City Bus employees(June 12, 2007)

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation offered a one day seminar for 60 Anbessa City Bus Service Enterprise employees on the benefits of Insurance and prevention of traffic accident on 12 June 2007, in collaboration with Traffic Control & Inspection Department of Addis Ababa City Police Commission .

Mr. Tesfaye Alemu, Deputy Managing Director of Marketing Division in his opening address stated that the Corporation is exerting utmost effort to minimize traffic accidents by working in collaboration with relevant government offices and this seminar is part and parcel of these continuous efforts.

The Ethiopian Insurance Corporation paid a claim to the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation for a damage at 'Melka Wakena' power generation plant.

The Managing Director of the Corporation, Mr. Tewodros Tilahun while issuing the cheque worth 21.5 million birr said that, "Our Corporation has repeatedly shown its partnership for the developmental and investment activities by providing different types of
